Let's Be Honest
a poem
So I let the words drip off my tongue, just harsh enough to disturb, and just vulnerable enough to infiltrate, but always finishing the dialogue with a dash of kindness, because it leaves the aftertaste of honey. They always remember what they like the taste of. And who doesn't have a sweet tooth? Honesty is the best policy, but we are in an age of revolt. Tell me to do something because it benefits only you, and I'll spit at your feet. Tell me to love you, and I'll look you in the eye and say, "I love you," with pity in my breath. Believe it as much as you believe in yourself. Hold onto it with the grip you wish you had around my throat. Look down at your hand and see your own fist, clenching, as if holding an invisible bouquet— an image of the flowers you said you'd get me. Have you heard? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So, flatter yourself and remember my words. "I promise" A decorative cross in an atheist's home. Honesty is but a beautiful fantasy of a betrayed girl. Now she serves you a spoonful of honey. She asks, "Doesn't it taste so sweet?" She loves honey. She takes one spoonful in her morning tea.
